WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Keep Your Gutters Clean

Ideally all homes will have covered gutters. If you don’t, take the necessary care to clean the gutters of all debris. They are a prime target for flying embers.

Monitor Roof Valleys

Be sure to blow the pine needles and leaves from all roof valleys and from around chimneys.

Observe Wind Patterns

On windy days observe where the wind blows leaves and pine needles. This is most likely where the wind will also blow firebrands. Pay close attention to these areas and keep them clean.

Deck Safety

Keep the deck clean, this means even between the crack and especially over joists. Do not use space under the deck as storage. Embers blown under the deck can ignite stored items. Screen the area under your deck with wire screen with 1/8th inch screen.

Proper Ventilation

All roofs are ventilated. Former building codes allowed for ¼ inch screens. The new code is 1/8th inch screen.
